Abstract
1,011,877. Dishwashing machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Oct. 4, 1962 [Oct. 16, 1961], No. 37589/62. Heading A4F. A dishwasher including a solenoid valve for supplying washing liquid, a liquid circulating pump, and a discharge pump, is characterized in that control means provided for energizing the solenoid and at least one pump is responsive to the attainment of a predetermined level of liquid in the washing tub to effect liquid flow to the discharge pump and to interrupt the pump and de-energize the solenoid after a certain fluid pressure has been attained a predetermined number of times in the discharge of the discharge pump. The dishwasher 1 (Fig. 1) has a liquid feed valve 10, a circulating pump 20 and a discharge pump 26 with an inlet pipe 27 and an outlet pipe 28. Both pumps are driven by a single electric motor 30. Liquid reaches inlet pipe 27 by way of a siphon device which establishes the maximum level attained by the liquid before flow to the pump 26 can take place. At the downstream side of the pump 26 is provided a pressure responsive ratchet actuator 50, Fig. 4, for the electrical control means. Initially an escapement 73 is actuated by a control knob 83 to set the ratchet wheel 78 in a position such that a cam surface portion 70 thereon is engaged by a cam follower 64 to close switch contacts 62, 63, and to energize the solenoid valve 10 and the pump motor 30. The circulating pump 20 then operates for a washing cycle which terminates when the water level rises sufficiently to operate the siphon device so that the fluid pressure at the outlet of the discharge pump 26 raises a diaphragm 54 and a rod 56 to open contacts 65, 66 and close the solenoid valve 10. The pump 26 continues to operate so that the washing liquid drains away and the discharge fluid pressure drops to cause one movement of the ratchet wheel 78 and re-closure of the contacts 65, 66 to reopen the valve 10. The washing cycle is repeated until the ratchet wheel 78 has advanced to a position where a raised surface 68 or 68.1 thereon engages, a cam follower 64 to open the contacts 62, 63 and de-energize the pump motor 30 and close the valve 10. The machine may then be re-started for a rinsing operation without the addition of detergent to the water supplied through the valve 10. Detergent may be washed from a dispenser within the machine during the first washing cycle.
