An aliphatic fuel that is not suited for direct combustion in a fuel cell is first oxidized catalytically into a form, e.g. an alcohol or aldehyde in which it can be consumed in a cell. Suitable starting materials are the butanes, pentanes, ethylene, propylene and butylene, butadiene and isoprene. Low boiling-point gasoline fractions may also be used. A cell and a plant for treating the starting materials are disclosed. Specification 806,644 is referred to.
