Abstract

1,010,560. Washing machines. PHILCO CORPORATION. Dec. 20, 1962 [Dec. 26, 1961], No. 48099/62. Heading D1A [Also in Division F2] A first one of two output shafts is permanently connected to a reversible motor, and the second output shaft is connected to the motor by a one-way driving and associated brake arrangement such that the second shaft is driven for one direction of rotation of the motor and is braked when the motor is operated in the reverse direction. As applied to a washing machine an input pulley 54 is reversably driven by an electric motor 71 and is fact with a shaft 36 coupled to an agitator 42. The input pulley 54 is formed with lugs 55, 56 engageable, according to the direction of rotation, with inturned ends 62, 63 of a clutch band 61 which frictionally engages the inside surface of a depending flange 67 of a drum 65. Drum 65 is fast with a cam 82 which has vertical abutment surfaces 83 and helical cam surfaces 84 co-operating with corresponding surfaces of a cam 85 the upper surface 91 of which engages the lowermost of a stack of brake discs 48 which are splined alternately to a fixed tubular column 22 and a hollow rotatable shaft 33 which is fast with a basket 15 of the washing machine. In operation the agitator shaft 36 is driven for both directions of rotation of the motor 71 and for rotation of the input pulley 54 in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 4, the lug 55 of the pulley engages the end 62 of the clutch band 61 and tends to disengage the clutch against the pressure of a spring 70 extending between the ends of the clutch band. The clutch is thus lightly engaged and partially rotates the cam 82, shifting the cam 85 axially through the co-operating helical surfaces 86 and compressing the brake discs 48 to station the shaft 33. For the opposite direction of rotation of the motor, the lug 56 of the input pulley engages the head of a stud 66 compressing a spring 66 extending between the head of the stud and the end 62 of the clutch band, so that the tendency of the input pulley to disengage the clutch band 61 is opposed by both springs 66, 70, so that the clutch remains firmly engaged and drives the cam 82, which through the vertical abutting surfaces drives the cam 85, which is in its lowermost position releasing the brake discs, and driving the shaft 33 by means of a spline connection between the cam 85 and this shaft. The basket 15 is therefore driven. When the motor 71 is de-energized following spinning of the basket 15, the basket will continue to spin under its own inertia. The shaft 33 will thus tend to drive the pulley 54 and the motor 71, which results in expanding of the cam 82, 85 axially and the application of the brake to assist stationing of the basket.
