Abstract

1,010,139. Capacitors. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. Sept. 24, 1963 [Sept. 28, 1962], No. 37491/63. Heading H1M. In a wound regenerative capacitor having for at least one electrode a thin metal coating deposited on a surface of a synthetic dielectric material, e.g. polystyrene, polycarbonate, at least the metallized surface of the dielectric is provided with a thin layer of a material whose oxygen and/or hydrogen content is so high that it produces no electrically conductive decomposition products in the vicinity of the perforation when breakdown and regeneration occur. The dielectric film may be coated, prior to vaporization metallizing with a thin layer of a non-aromatic oxygen and hydrogen-rich organic compound by placing the film in vacuo, introducing gaseous or vaporized monomers of the compound to be used, and producing a glow discharge to polymerize the monomers and deposit the polymer on the film surface. Alternatively, oxygen and/or hydrogen atoms or oxygen and/or hydrogen rich radicals may be chemically introduced into the molecular surface of the film by reacting it with oxygen and/or hydrogen or with gaseous or vaporized organic or inorganic hydrogen and/or oxygen rich compounds, e.g. water vapour, in the presence of an electrical discharge, high-energy radiation, e.g. ultra-violet or X-ray, or an electron beam, bombarding the foil. Alternatively, the film may be exposed to a strongly oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. ozone, preferably at high temperatures. The film may be loosely rolled with or without a porous intermediate layer, and may previously be degassed in vacuo. The thin layer may be produced on one or both sides of the film, and it may also be produced on a varnish film produced on a carrier film before metallization and removal for winding into a capacitor.
