A shoe upper conforming machine, of the type having toe embracing wipers, and a ball lasting device on each side of the upper - for example as in Specification 871,990 or 1,010,149 - has a waist lasting device on each side of the upper between the heel breast line and the ball lasting device. In the embodiment of the first Provisional Specification the waist lasting devices 10, 12 comprise pads 14 of resilient material - i.e. sponge rubber - the portions 18 of which press the upper against the last while the lip 16 of harder resilient material wipes the upper margin across the insole. Each pad 14 is connected to a piston, operated by compressed air, in a cylinder 22 and is prevented from twisting by a slotted arm 28. The unit is adjustably secured to the rest of the machine by a bracket 24. In the embodiment of the second Provisional Specification one side of the waist lasting device (Fig. 1) comprises a gripper with jaws 234, 236, a clamp block 178 for pressing the upper against the last just prior to its release from the gripper, and wipers 156. The jaws are closed by the wedge 228, connected to a piston 224 in a cylinder 200, for forcing the rollers 230, 232 apart. The piston 206 in a cylinder 204 both of which are part of a lever system 220, 194, 188, 196, 198, 200, 202 causes the gripper to move down thereby tensioning the upper. The knob 218 adjusts the heightwise position of the gripper. The clamp block 178, which is prevented from twisting by a spring 184, and wiper 156 are moved into contact with the upper by pistons 178 and 154 respectively in bores 132, 130. The wiper, which is formed of spring steel and slit to form a plurality of fingers, is pivoted at 160 to the end of the piston 154 and abuts the end of a plunger 166 backed by a spring 168 housed in the end of the piston 154. Each of the pistons 154, 178, 206 and 224 is fluid operated in its outward stroke and is brought back by springs. The waist lasting device is pivoted to a trunnion bracket 114 (not shown) which is slidably mounted on the casing 100, Fig. 3 (not shown), of the ball lasting device by means of an arcuate bracket 104. The unit can be raised from its retracted position, so that the shoe bottom engaging member 144-contacts the shoe bottom, by means of a piston 136 the end of which abuts the bracket 104. The screw 152 adjusts the position of the member 144 relative to the rest of the unit. In operation the waist grippers 234, 236 are actuated after the ball grippers of Specification 1,010,149 with the waist and ball wipers then moving in concurrently.
