Abstract
1,009,524. Waveguides. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. June 28, 1962 [July 5, 1961], No. 24825/62. Heading H1W. A non-reciprocal device for electromagnetic wave energy comprises a section of rectangular waveguide 10, an element 12 of gyromagnetic material disposed within the waveguide and extending transversely for a substantial extent on one side of the longitudinal centre line of the waveguide and polepieces 15, 16 for applying a steady magnetic field to the element that is substantially more intense away from the longitudinal centre line than in the portion thereof near the centre line such that the field increases according to a parabolic function. The gyromagnetic material has a narrow resonance line width and may comprise iron oxide with one or more of the oxide of a bivalent metal such as nickel, magnesium, zinc, manganese or aluminium combined in a spinel crystal structure. As shown, the waveguide may be disposed in a channel of one block of magnetic material having pole faces of one polarity and a block of magnetic material having a pole face of opposite polarity disposed adjacent a long wall of the waveguide, magnetic field lines 20, 21 being produced. It is stated that broad band operation is obtained by virtue of the fact that the physical position of the circularly polarized magnetic field present within the waveguide at a certain frequency of the transmitted wave is correlated to the resonant frequency of the ferrite produced by the applied magnetic field.
