Abstract

Fats are extracted from raw material of animal, vegetable, or marine origin by treating the comminuted raw material in a multi-stage counterflow process with an organic solvent mixture which boils below the boiling point of water and which comprises one or more water-miscible solvents and one or more water-immiscible fat-dissolving solvents, in order that in the first stage (i.e. where raw material enters and solvent mixture leaves the system) the combined liquid exists in two separate phases of which one consists of water and water-miscible solvent and the other of fat and water-immiscible solvent. Additional water may be added to the raw material before or during the treatment. A suitable solvent mixture comprises, by volume, 75 parts hydrocarbon solvent of distillation range 54-70 DEG C., 15 parts ethyl acetate, 5 parts acetone, and 5 parts ethyl alcohol. The material may be further comminuted during the treatment. Specification 905,607 also is referred to.ALSO:Protein free from fat, water, and, if desired, flavour components, is produced from raw material of animal, vegetable or marine origin, by treating the comminuted raw material in a multi-stage counterflow process with an organic solvent mixture which boils below the boiling point of water and which comprises one or more water-miscible solvents and one or more water-immiscible fat dissolving solvents, in order that in the first stage (i.e. where raw material enters and solvent mixture leaves the system) the combined liquid exists in two separate phases of which one consists of water and water-miscible solvent and the other of fat and water-immiscible solvent.
