Abstract

1,009,298. Selective signalling systems. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. June 24, 1964, No. 26133/64. Heading G4H. The height of liquid in a column 2 or a dimension of an object is measured by a lamp 4 and photo-cell 3 which are moved along the column 2 to provide a variable duration signal to open gate 9, a perforated strip 5 being simultaneously moved between a further photo-cell 7 and a lamp 6 to provide a train of pulses which are passed through gate 9 to counter 19, 20 until the liquid/air interface is reached. The length of the air column above the liquid may be measured by the same method. The apparatus is applicable to the measurement of mercury columns in thermometers and barometers and also to the measurement of the dimensions of objects as disclosed in Specification 962,296.
