Means for holding a shaft B in assembled relationship with a machine element K through which the shaft extends, comprise a cotter made from a single piece of spring wire and having one or two legs 2 which extend through a transverse hole 1 in the shaft, each leg being connected to one or two retaining portions 4 which extend partially or wholly around the shaft B. The retaining portion or portions 4 provide two bends 5 which are located on opposite sides of the shaft B, extend past the leg or legs on an axial direction and press directly or indirectly on the machine element in the axial direction of the shaft.
