A scraper ring of hard plastic, e.g. nylon, for a reciprocable shaft j comprises a body a and axially extending inner and outer flanges, the inner flange c inclining inwards towards the axis of the ring and the outer flange d inclining outwards from the axis of the ring at an angle substantially greater than the inclination angle of the inner flange. The ring is retained in a recess h in the shaft housing by the free end f of the outer flange d engaging a shoulder i formed between the recess and a bore g in the housing. To facilitate insertion of the ring the bore has a frusto-conical entrance k.
