Abstract
Dispersion-hardened alloys of increased strength are produced by melting and resolidifying pre-prepared dispersion-hardened alloys. The hardening material may be oxides, nitrides, carbides and/or borides incorporated in the pre-prepared alloy in amount in the range 0.5-15.0%, e.g. by powder metallurgy or, in the case of oxides, by internal oxidation. The pre-prepared alloy may be melted from a consumable electrode in an electric arc furnace and solidified in a cooled permanent mould or it may be melted in an electron beam furnace. Melting may be carried out in a vacuum or in a protective atmosphere. The solid product may be forged, rolled or extruded. In an example powdered nickel mixed with about 5% of aluminium oxide was pressed, sintered in argon for 4 hours at 1150 DEG C., cooled, melted in an arc vacuum furnace and solidified in a cooled copper mould. In a further example a powdered alloy of nickel and 1.5% aluminium was compacted, heated in air for 4 hours at 800 DEG C., cooled, reheated in hydrogen for 6 hours at 450 DEG C., sintered in argon at 1150 DEG C., melted in an arc vacuum furnace and solidified in a cooled copper mould. The product was forged and rolled into sheets.
