Abstract

<PICT:1007940/C6-C7/1> A coating control device for use with hot dipping apparatus comprises a holder 30 fixed to the apparatus above the coating bath, a non-wettable coating control element 22 positioned in the bore of holder 30 so as to have freedom of radial movement, a conduit 41 entering the holder about element 22 tangentially to the inner surface of the holder for introducing a non-oxidizing gas, and a swirl imparting member 35 positioned in the holder above the element 22 having an annular groove aligned with conduit 41 and a plurality of passages 40 extending from said groove tangentially into the bore 36 and so distributing the non-oxidizing gas around the coated strand 15 which passes through the device via bores 22a and 36. The element 22 with bore 22a, which determines the thickness of the coating on strand 15 is positioned in the holder 30 by means of a flange 22b which bears against surface 33 and is therefore allowed freedom of radial movement. Similarly the swirl imparting member 35 is positioned in the holder by means of flange 38 and the gas distributing passages 40 are directed downwardly into bore 36 and are symmetrically disposed. An additional groove 42 above groove 39 may locate with a complementary groove 43 on the holder 30 and packing material 44 between the two grooves provides a gas seal. Specification 827,925 is referred to.
