Abstract

1,007,191. Bearings. AUTOSET (PRODUCTION) Ltd. April 7, 1964 [Jan. 9, 1963 ; March 8, 1963], Nos. 1084/63, 15231/63 and 9205/63. Heading F2A. In a self-contained ball bearing the inner and outer races are each formed of a pair of wire loops, the ends of each wire having a small gap therebetween. In an embodiment, balls 14, Fig. 1, outer race 12, 13 and inner race 16, 17 are retained by a pair of sheet metal anglesection pressings 10, 11. A cast or moulded inner member 15 supports the inner face wires 16, 17. A portion 10a of the pressing 10 is deformed after all the required components have been assembled. In a modification, a washer 18, Fig. 2, abuts the ring 13 and a step abuts the ring 17 so as to reduce the distance between wires 12, 13 and 16, 17 and support mainly radial loads applied to the bearing. Similarly the bearing can be adjusted for mainly axial loading. In another modification, a housing 30, Fig. 3, has an inclined face cooperating with a wedge-shaped circlip 31 which abuts a washer 32. The washer 32 is urged against the ring 13 so as to effect pre-loading. The inner member 33 is a pressing. In yet another modification as shown in Fig. 4, the housing is grooved to accommodate the wires 12, 13 and the inner member has a shoulder which abuts the ring 17. The ring 16 is abutted by spacing washers 53 and the assembly may be secured together by welding at 54, for example.
