Abstract
An alkali metal sulphide, or hydrosulphide or an organic compound of the formula R1HN(X)C=S, in which X represents an alkyl or aryl group or the group NH2R3 and in which R1, R2 and R3 are the same or different and represent hydrogen or an alkyl or aryl group, said organic compound being capable of tautomerism to the thiol form is used as an activator for a vulcanizable composition comprising a natural or synthetic rubber, a zinc compound, sulphur, and a sulphur-bearing vulcanization accelerator. Compounds exemplified are sodium sulphide, thiourea, diethylthiourea, diphenyl thiourea, and thioacetamide. The composition is especially suitable for the low temperature vulcanization of latices and vulcanization in the presence of copper compounds.
