Abstract

1,006,715. Spark gaps. LICENTIA-PATENT VERWALTUNGS G.m.b.H. Aug. 15, 1962, No. 31322/62. Heading H1X. [Also in Division H2] An excess voltage protection device or diverter comprises a stack of magnetic blow-out arc gap devices, in each of which straight portions of electrodes 3, 4 converge to form an ignition gap 6 and thereafter diverge at a wider angle before extending part way along parallel or substantially parallel side walls of an arc-quenching chamber. The latter is formed by a ceramic base 1 and a cover secured thereto, e.g. by rivets inserted in bores 5. Arc splitter plates 18 and exhaust openings 16 are provided. The top and bottom walls of the chamber may converge towards the openings 16 to increase the cooling effect, and may be of undulating form to increase the effective width of the chamber. The electrodes may be of square or round section and may be made of copper or brass. The base 1 of a modified device (Fig. 6, not shown), is circular in shape and the cover is formed by the base of the device immediately above in the stack. The orientation of the electrodes in successive chambers is staggered as determined by the position of a notch of each device which engages a recess in the adjacent device. Electrodes of adjacent devices are either soldered together externally of the stack or spring- pressed together inside the stack.
