Abstract
Metal surfaces are protected by a triple plating with nickel, in which the first coating contains 0-0.03% of S, the second contains 0.02-0.15% of S, and the top coat 0.02-0.15% of S. The S-content of the intermediate coat is greater than either the top or bottom coats. Preferably the thicknesses of the coats are respectively 0.15-1.5 mil, 0.005-0.2 mil, and 0.15-1.5 mil. The S is incorporated by using soluble S compounds in specified amounts. The metal surface e.g. iron, steel, magnesium, or aluminium, may first receive a flash coating of Cu, Zn, or Ni. A final thin coating of chromium may be applied. The intermediate and top Ni coats may contain up to 50% of cobalt; other additions include Se, Te, Zn, Cd, Fe, and carbon. A wide range of S compounds are given including aryl sodium sulphinates, sodium thiosulphate, or sulphite, sodium formyl sulphoxylate, phenyl sulphoxide, mercapto-succinic acid and thiourea. A Watts type nickel bath is preferred, but Ni fluoborate and sulphamate may be used. Optional additions include salts of NH4, Li, Mg, wetting agents, sulphonic acids and sulphonamides, lower aliphatic acids, coumarin, chloral, and N-allyl quinaldinium bromide.
