Abstract

Sheet packaging materials are rendered antifungal by applying thereto a continuous or discontinuous (e.g. dotted or striped) coating comprising sorbic acid and one or more chemical substances which will remove compounds or ions which accelerate oxidation and breakdown or which are oxidized preferentially in the presence of sorbic acid. Suitable chemical substances are antioxidants and/or chelating agents. The base material may be any which is suitable for the intended purpose, e.g. regenerated cellulose film; fibrous or nonfibrous papers; woven or bonded fibre fabrics; metallic foils; natural high polymers such as rubber, and modifications thereof, e.g. rubber hydrochloride; synthetic polymers such as polyethylene, P.V.C., polyvinyl alcohol, polystyrene, polyamides e.g. nylon, polyesters e.g. polyethylene terephthalate or combinations thereof. Additionally, the base may carry on one or both surfaces a thermoplastic coating, e.g. of paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, amorphous or crystalline vegetable or animal fats or waxes, natural or synthetic elastomers, cellulose ethers or esters, synthetic polymers, e.g. polyethylene glycol, polyethylene oxide, P.V.C., polyvinylidene chloride, natural or synthetic gums and resins or mixtures thereof. The sorbic acid and the antioxidant and/or chelating agent may be applied in the same or different coating layers, which may contain a thermoplastic binder, e.g. paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, natural or synthetic elastomers or gums, resins, starches or dextrins, polyvinyl acetate being preferred. Numerous classes and specific examples of antioxidants and chelating agents are given.
