Abstract
An organic hydrophilic colloid together with entrapped pigment, which may be a metal, dye, dye mordant or dye-forming substance is cathodically deposited from a dilute aqueous solution of the colloid and pigment, dye, dyemordant or dye-forming substance with an applied potential of typically 60 or 80 volts. The colloid may be gelatin, gum tragacanth, guar gum, gum arabic, or water-permeable starches such as amylopectin or the amylose fraction of potato starch or the hydroxyethyl derivative of such fraction which may be stabilized with formaldehyde and the associated constituents of the aqueous electrolyte may be diazo dye components which couple or dyes which change colour as the pH increases, pyridinium salts which yield coloured products at the cathode, silver salts complexed with thiourea or hypo which yield cathodic deposits of silver and silver sulphide, or cobaltous or magnesium nitrate which produce hardened deposits of lime process gelatin or gelatin containing the ammonium salt of styrene-maleamic acid copolymer respectively.
