Abstract

1,006,014. Indexing mechanisms. NATIONAL BROACH & MACHINE CO. May 31, 1962, No. 21024/62. Heading B3B. A fluid-operated indexing mechanism for a machine tool comprises a stationary support member 12 within which is rotatably mounted a shaft 22 which carries a work-table (not shown) and an index plate 26. The index plate has circumferential toothed feeding and locating portions 32 and 34 respectively. A pusher member 48 with arms 52 and 54 is mounted for rotational movement on a sleeve 14 on the shaft 22, the movement being limited by adjustable stops 108, 110, connected to a support 36 cooperating with portion 102 of the arm 54. A lever and pawl 70 and 72 are mounted on the arm 52 for limited pivotal movement in a housing 62 and are actuated by hydraulic means 84, 92. Operation of the hydraulic means effects movement of the lever 70 to engage the pawl 72 in the toothed portion 32 of the under plate and therefore effect rotation of the plate, and in consequence the work-table, by an amount determined by the stops 108, 110. Following this indexing movement the plate 26 is locked in position by a locator 144, which extends from an operating device 142 carried on an arm 126. Hydraulic means 146 effects disengagement between the locator 144 and the teeth 160 on the locating portion 34 of the index plate, the locator 44 being normally urged into engagement with the index plate by a spring 158. Operation of the indexing and locking devices is effected sequentially and a switch 164 is provided which co-operates with screw means 140 to cut off the electrical supply to the machine in the event of malfunction of the indexing mechanism.
