Abstract

1,005,934. Rolling screw-threads; self-tapping screws. GENERAL AMERICAN TRANSPORTATION CORPORATION. May 22, 1964 [May 28, 1963], No. 21356/64. Headings B3N and B3M. A fluteless, swaging, self-tapping screw, comprises a continuous thread of fixed pitch, at least part of which has a crest projection which is cyclically variable between maximum and minimum values along the helix. The screw 10, Fig. 3, has a rolled thread 14, whose crest is cyclically variable on the portion 14W1- 14Z2, but is not variable on the lead portion 11a. In a modification, Fig. 11, the crest is cyclically variable on both the lead in, and the rear portion, of the shank 111. In a further modification, Fig. 12, the cyclic variation is only present on the lead-in portion of the shank. The screw is formed from a blank, the threads are rolled on by a pair of roll dies 30, Fig. 1, and the screw is then hardened.
