Abstract

1,005,669. Separating solids. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. July 30, 1962 [Aug. 30, 1961], No. 29208/62. Heading B2H. A classifier for separating particles into size fractions comprises a stepped tray 12 which is supported in a sloping position and in such a manner that the extent of tray movement decreases towards the lower end as it is vibrated to throw the larger particles down the steps. The tray is rigidly bolted to a plate 19 and given a greater amplitude of vibration at its upper end then the lower end by an electromagnet 15 which operates against the action of leaf springs 18. After shaking a sample of material placed on the top step, the sample is distributed down the steps according to particle size, the larger particles accumulating near the bottom. This distribution may be varied by adjusting the slope of the tray on a slotted member 26 varying the spring tension by adjusting bolts 21, controlling the power output of the electromagnet or using trays having different heights and widths of riser and tread or different angles between riser and tread.
