A process for the manufacture of a rubber roller lining 4 on a metal core 1 which prevents and/or eliminates air occlusions in the rubber lining comprises arranging an extruded rectangular section rubber strip helically wound on the core 1, or strips of rubber laid side by side on the core parallel to the core axis, or a rubber sleeve fitted over the core, and placing the resulting assembly in a bag 5 connected via a tube 6 to an air evacuating apparatus (not shown), the unit being then placed in a hermetically sealed container, which is also connected at 8 to the air evacuating apparatus, and the air in the container 7 and bag 5 being simultaneously evacuated by opening cocks 9 and 10, after which the cock 9 is closed and the original pressure restored in the container 7 to collapse the bag 5 on to the metal core and rubber assembly, the interior of the container then being heated to vulcanize the rubber together and to the core in the vacuum of the bag. The vulcanization process may be further improved after heating by increasing the interior pressure of the container to a valve of 3 to 6 atmospheres. The roller is subsequently finished cylindrically by turning and/or polishing.
