Abstract

The dark resistance of photo-conductive zinc oxide which is to be incorporated in electrophotographic material is decreased by treating between 0.1 and 20% of the powder surface with a reducing agent having a reducing potential equal to or greater than that of the stannous ion. Reducing agents specified are tannic acid, gentisic acid, pyrogallol, benzylaminophenol, ascorbic acid, and stannous salts. The zinc oxide is treated by adding a solution of the reducing agent to a slurry of the oxide. The other components of a photo-conductive layer may then be added, for example polymers and dyes, and an electro-photographic material made by coating the mix on to a support.
