Abstract

1,004,945. Mass spectrometers. H. EWALD. Feb. 27, 1963 [Feb. 28, 1962], No. 7813/63. Heading H1D. In a mass spectrograph or mass spectrometer using the parabola method with magnetic and electric fields deflecting the ions in perpendicular directions, in order to focus deflected ions of like mass and energy at one point, the entry and exit surfaces of the magnetic field are mutually inclined to form a sector field while condenser plates which provide a sector-shaped electric field follow inner and outer boundaries of an arcuate passage through which the particles pass, and the plane of curvature of the mean line of this passage is perpendicular to the magnetic field. The Figure shows the magnetic sector field #m followed by the electric sector field #e as viewed in two perpendicular directions. The condenser may be cylindrical or toroidal and the magnetic field boundaries may be curved. The polepieces of the electromagnetic providing the magnetic field may be provided with semi-cylindrical, rotatable inserts to vary the inclination of the field at the entry or exit boundaries. The condenser may also be rotated. Reference is made to the two sector fields being superimposed and either field may precede the other. Equations for calculation allowing for the fringe effects of the magnetic field are given.
