Abstract
1,004,604. Radiators for internal combustion engines; headers for heat exchangers. ASSOCIATED ENGINEERING Ltd. May 1, 1963 [May 3, 1962], No.. 17000/62; 9435/63. Heading F4S. [Also in Division B3] A hollow shell member 4 is fixed by means of a synthetic resin or plastic adhesive directly to a metal tube plate 2, to form the header tank of a radiator for a liquid-cooled internal combustion engine. In the form shown the plate 2 has a grooved flange 9 in which the adhesive 11 is placed (Fig. 2a). Shell member 4 has a complementary flange 10 which on assembly compresses the adhesive and spreads it throughout the groove (Figs. 2b and 2c). Whilst the adhesive is cured the assembly may be held in a jig or held together by spring clips 12 (Fig. 1). The water inlet and outlet pipes 7, 8 in the header tanks and the filler cap connection 6 in the upper header tank may likewise be secured in position by the adhesive, and these joints may also include a mechanical connection (Figs. 3 to 6, not shown). Other elements of the radiator may also be joined by the adhesive, particularly mentioned being the joining of the radiator tubes to the tube plates and the fixing of mounting brackets to the radiator.
