[Also in Division B7] A method of manufacturing a pneumatic tyre comprises the steps of moulding and vulcanizing a radial cord casing, radially and transversely expanding the casing while it is still hot by applying an internal pressure immediately after it leaves the mould, so as to stretch the monofilamentary nylon or rayon cords of the casing, leaving the casing to cool under tension to a temperature below the contraction temperature of the cords to stabilize them at their stretched length, and, finally, fixing to the casing an inextensible crown layer and a tread having an inner diameter substantially equal to the final outer diameter of the expanded casing. The tyre is then inserted in a mould to shape and vulcanize the tread, this operation being calked out so that the already vulcanized side walls of the tyre are not over-heated. To avoid this possibility, the side walls may be applied after the casing has been vulcanized and expanded. In an alternative method the tread and the crown layer may be vulcanised separately and then adhesively secured to the expanded casing.
