Abstract

Desferrioxamines (i.o. ferrioxamines from which the iron has been removed) are obtained by the cultivation of microorganisms suitable for the manufacture of ferrioxamines, in a nutrient solution containing at most 10-7 mol. of iron salt per litre. Any ferrioxamine formed may be converted into the desferri compound by adding a compound capable of forming iron complexes e.g. 8-hydroxyquinoline. The microorganisms are Actinomycetes, genus Streptomyces and genus Nocardia. The desferrioxamines are separated by adsorption on ion exchangers or by solvent extraction. Examples are given.
