Abstract
1,004,084. Ionic beam recording; televisions. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 29, 1961 [Aug. 29, 1960], No. 31080/61. Heading G5R. [Also in Divisions H1, H4 and H5] A latent image is formed by bombarding a surface with a modulated beam of metallic ions and a permanent visible image produced by the subsequent step of vapour-depositing on the surface a coating of another metal. The ion beam formed in the demountable housing 10 by means of a metallic-vapour producing furnace 29 and an electron gun 25, 26, 27 is modulated by grid 30, accelerated by anodes 32, 33 and deflected by plates 35, 36 to impinge on recording tape 15. An electrostatic lens is provided at 37 and 40, 41, 42 are screens for stray particles. The vapour deposition step takes place in a chamber held at a lower pressure than the main housing, the vapour being produced in heated crucible 49. The tape 15 can be advanced continuously or step-by-step or a stationary sheet can be used which is removed from the apparatus and developed later. The beam need not be scanned over the recording surface, but may be directed on to the surface through a modulating plate, e.g. charged grid or master pattern. Suitable metals for the ion beam are copper, silver, beryllium, chromium and nickel and for the metal vapour copper, zinc, cadmium, barium, magnesium, lead or antimony. The developed image may be thickened by electroplating. Suitable material for the recording surface is barium sulphate-filled paper or a synthetic resin such as cellulose acetate, polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate, ethylcellulose, polyvinyl chloride, methyl methacrylate or cellulose acetate butyrate either in sheet form or as a coating on e.g. paper, cloth, metal or glass plates. Metals or semi-conductors, such as cadmium sulphide or zinc oxide can also be used. Also mentioned are a fabric-reinforced phenol formaldehyde resin, polychlorotrifluorethylene, polyethylene and silicone rubber. The ion beam gun may contain oxygen which combines with the metallic ions produced so that a portion at least of the latent image may be formed by metallic oxides. The ions may be produced without the use of an electron gun, e.g. by means of an arc discharge.
