Abstract
The invention provides aqueous compositions and a process for dyeing hair in which naphthazarin (5, 8 dihydroxy 1, 4 naphthoquinone) is used with a water soluble surface active agent and a thickening agent. The composition preferably contain 0.01-10% of naphthazarin, 0.25-15% of water soluble surface active agent and 0.1-20% of a thickening agent, the remainder being water, an alkaline reagent may also be included. Dyeing is generally at temperature below 40 DEG C. and at pH values of 2.5 to 11. Any anionic, non-ionic or cationic surface active agent may be used, and the thickening agent may be any conventional one e.g. sodium alginate, gum arabic, cellulose derivatives, acrylic and polyacrylic compounds or inorganic thickeners e.g. bentonite. Any water soluble alkaline reagent may be employed and when used is used as 0.1 to 10% by weight of the composition, specified are aliphatic diamines and polyamines, alkanolamines and aryldialkanolamines.
