Abstract

1,003,598. Miscellaneous releasable fastenings. WILMOT-BREEDEN Ltd. May 6, 1964 [May 10, 1963], No. 18527/63. Addition to 993,147 Headings E2A. [Also in Divisions B7 and Fl] In an anti-theft device wherein a steering locking bolt 7 and key-operated ignition switch mechanism 20 are interlocked so that one cannot be operated until the other is in the inoperative position, and the locking bolt automatically returns to inoperative position when the key is turned in the direction opposite to that required to operate the ignition switch, the turning of the key in the said opposite direction is, if necessary, capable of producing positive retracting movement of the bolt. The bolt 7, carrying the bolt head 12 for engaging a recess in the steering column, has a slot 26 co-operating with a non-circular portion of the switch shaft 20 on which is pivotally mounted a pawl 23. In the retracted position of bolt 7, the shaft 20 is situated in a circular part of slot 26 with a flat 25 thereon aligned with a flat edge 27 of the slot 26, whereby bolt 7 can be pushed by an operating member inserted through opening 10 against spring 40 towards locking position in which it is held by a step 37 on pawl 23 engaging face 38 of a projection 35. In this position the edge 27 co-operates with the flat 25 to prevent the key being turned in the normal direction to close the ignition and starting switch. To release bolt 7, the key is turned in the opposite direction whereupon flat 24 on shaft 20 contacts projection 30 to rotate pawl 23 free of projection 35 to allow spring 40 to return the bolt 7 to inoperative position. If the bolt jams, the spring 40 becomes compressed to solid state and transmits the movement of shaft 20 positively to bolt 7 to force it positively to inoperative position. When the ignition switch is operative the flat 25 engages projection 30 to hold pawl 23 so that it cannot be moved aside by projection 35, preventing bolt 7 being moved to the locking position.
