Abstract

A band of conducting material undergoing treatment in a liquid to remove an electrically resistant film on the band, particularly oxide scale on sheet steel by pickling, is contacted by a pair of electrodes and changes in an electrical system containing the electrodes are detected e.g. by measuring the P.D. across the electrodes to detect the presence of the film. The pickling may be carried out in a plurality of baths, one pair of electrodes being applied to the band between the last and penultimate bath while another such pair with means for measuring the P.D. across them is applied to the band after the last bath, and the speed of the band through the baths being adjusted until the P.D.s across the electrodes in each pair correspond to there being no film on the band leaving the last bath while there is some film on the band leaving the penultimate bath. Preferably the pairs of electrodes are made to sweep transversely across the band, and compressed air is projected against the band to prevent pickling solution interfering with the operation of the electrodes.
