Abstract
1,003,262. Feeding sheets. C.J. HEYWOOD. Jan. 27, 1964 [Nov. 2, 1962], No. 41595/62. Heading B6B. In sheet feeding apparatus wherein a depleted stack of sheets is replenished without interrupting the sheet separation and feeding, a main stack hoisting mechanism and an auxiliary hoisting mechanism are provided which are each capable of producing continuous upward movement in response to a downward displacement of a feeler engaging the top of the stack. As shown, sheets can be separated from the top of the stack 3 by oscillating suckers 10, and an adjustable feeler 12 resting on the stack can operate a control switch in a circuit which includes two motors, one motor (9, not shown) adapted to operate on chains 8 to lift the main table 5, and the other motor 24 serving to lift by chains 23 an auxiliary hoist comprising a pair of cross-bars 22. The main table 5 is supported by cross-bars 7 and has recesses 6. In operation, with the stack 3 still supported by the main table 5 and nearly exhausted, rods 25 provided with head portions are thrust into the recesses 6 beneath the stack 3, the motor 24 is started to raise the bars 22 to a position just below the rods 25 and a further switch is operated to cut out the feeler 12 and its switch from the circuit of the main motor (9), and include it in the circuit of the motor 24, whereupon the auxiliary hoist takes over. A switch is now operated to cause the main motor to lower the table 5 to receive a new sheet stack 4 (as shown). At this stage, a wooden wedge 26, comprising a number of spaced wedge-shaped fingers held together by a back 28 which is situated below the plane of the fingers, is inserted below the bottom sheet of the depleted stack 3, and the main motor is then started to raise the top of the new stack 4 nearly into contact with the rods 25. The feeler 12 and its mechanism is now switched into the main motor circuit, and the stack 4 is thus raised to engage the rods 25 and lift the stack 3. The rods 25 can be withdrawn slowly, and later the wedge 26 is withdrawn, all these operations being performed without interrupting the sheet feed.
