Abstract
A process for the production of shaped non-porous polyurethanes containing free -NCO groups comprises reacting (a) one or more active hydrogen containing compounds of MW at least 600, OH number of 25-190, acid number of less than 2, (b) a chain extending agent other than water having a MW below 300 and (c) an excess of an organic polyisocyanate and shaping the resin formed by the reaction of (a), (b) and (c), wherein less than 0.3% by weight of water is present during and after the reaction and wherein the resin is maintained in an atmosphere containing below 0.0055 lb. of water per lb. of dry air. The component (a) may be a polyester, polyesteramide, polyether or polyacetal. Aromatic, aliphatic and heterocyclic diisocyanates are listed. Components (a), (b) and (c) may be mixed together simultaneously or sequentially. Component (c) may be a glycol, diamine or amino alcohol and may be unsaturated. In Example (1) diphenylmethane 4,41-diisocyanate was added to a mixture of polyethylene glycol adipate polyester and the bis-(beta hydroxy ethyl ether) of hydroquinone and poured on to a waxed tray. The solid was divided and stored under conditions of varying humidity. Specifications 769,682 and 1,002,519 are referred to.
