Abstract

1,002,251. Hydraulic brakes; clutch control. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. June 1, 1962 [June 9, 1961], No. 20865/61. Headings F2F and F2L. In a master cylinder for an hydraulic braking system, a seal 9 is fitted between the piston 5 and the cylinder 1 and is axially slidable relative to the piston over a limited distance determined by the clearance between the rear face of the seal and the front face of the piston to permit fluid from a reservoir to flow behind the seal into the cylinder via an inlet port 3 from a reservoir (not shown) and radial holes 13 when the seal is in its axially forward position relative to the piston, the flow being interrupted when the seal is in the axially-rearward position at which position, when the piston is fully retracted, a relief vent 4 leading from the reservoir is adapted to connect the cylinder on the operative side of the piston. Movement of the piston 5 to the right causes the seal to remain stationary with respect to the cylinder until the clearance space between the rear face of the seal and the front face of the piston has been taken up. A reinforcing ring 10 is provided at the outer periphery of the seal. The Specification discloses a tandem master cylinder in which both pistons are provided with a similar seal.
