Abstract

1,002,095. Paper-making apparatus: felts. HUYCK CORPORATION. Jan. 16, 1964 [Jan. 24, 1963], No. 1961/64. Headings D1K, D1R and D2A. [Also in Divisions B5 and F4] A wet press in a paper-making machine comprises rolls 8, 10, a water receiving mat 4, and a. "duplex felt" 6 which has on the paper web 2 side a compressible, low void volume, felted layer (or surface) and on the mat side a less compressible, less felted, higher void volume layer (or surface). The term "duplex felt" means a felt formed either from two separate layers woven stitched, or needled together, or from a single system of yarns woven such that the two surfaces have different characteristics. Thus a felt may comprise on the one hand a carded batt needled to a base fabricfor example a plain weave, a twill weave, or a 4- harness satin-, or on the other hand a 4-harness satin weave secured to a plain weave by locking yarns, Figs. 3 and 9 (not shown), or merely a 4- harness satin weave, Fig. 6 (not shown). Further a 5- or 6- harness satin weaves may be used for the low void volume surface, and a basket, twill, or broken twill weave for the high void volume surface. The yarns in the low void volume surface are predominantly of animal fibres lightly twisted together, while those in the high void volume surface contain either a significant amount of synthetic polymer, e.g. a polyamide or a polyester, or wool fibres highly twisted together. The duplex felt may be made water-receptive or -repellant. Mat 4 may be of rubber or plastics with holes, cavities or pores therein, may be woven from relatively non absorbent material, or may be a.flexible wire netting, or felt. Compressed air nozzles 12 and 14, and suction boxes 20 and 22 dry mat 4 and felt 6, while doctor blade 11 removes water from roll 10 the surface of which may be made water-receptive.
