Abstract
A thermoplastic moulding composition comprises a blend of (1) 50 to 95 parts by weight of a copolymer of a major proportion of a C1-C6 alkyl methacrylate and a minor proportion of monomer selected from acrylonitrile, substituted acrylonitriles, N-substituted acrylamides and N-substituted alkacrylamides, and (2) from 5 to 50 parts of a graft polymer consisting of polybutadiene, natural or synthetic polyisoprene, copolymers of butadiene with acrylonitrile or methyl methacrylate, polyisobutylene, poly (isobutylene-co-isoprene), rubbery alkyl acrylate homo- and copolymers, a rubbery polyurethane or a rubbery polyalkylene, on to which is grafted at least 20% by weight, based on the weight of the rubbery material, of at least one of the monomer precursors of (1). The blending of the two polymers may be effected by mixing them in solution and/or dispersion and simultaneously devolatizing and extruding the mixture at a temperature of between 110 DEG and 245 DEG 245 DEG C. and at a pressure of less than 200 mm. Hg. The graft polymers are preferably prepared by polymerization of monomer in an aqueous latex of rubbery material. The examples describe the use of copolymers of methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile, with styrene as an optical third monomer, and graft copolymers of polybutadiene with methyl methacrylate, or mixtures of methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile, with styrene as an optional third monomer.
