Abstract
1,001,579. Measuring tensile strength electrically. N. V. ODERZOEKINGSINSTITUUT RESEARCH. June 22,1962 [June 26,1961], No. 24081/62. Heading G1N. Apparatus for determining the tensile strength of fibres comprises a movable clamp 12, and a nominally fixed clamp 11, gripping a known length of fibre 19 between them, the fixed clamp 11 being attached to a spring assembly 7, 8, 9 carried by a frame 1, and controlling the movable electrode 6 of a differential capacitor assembly having fixed electrodes 4, 5. Rotation of a drive screw 14 by a synchronous electric motor stretches the fibre 19 at a constant rate by displacement of clamp 12, the fibre elongation being measured by the slider 15 of a potentiometer 16. The corresponding tension in the fibre is measured by the unbalance of an A.C.bridge incorporating capacitors 4, 6 and 5, 6 Each measurement is effected in an automatically balanced bridge circuit (Fig. 2), whose pointers 30, representing tensile force modified in accordance with the denier of the fibre set up on coupled potentiometers R4, R5, and 21, representing the elongation of the fibre, are clamped in position when the fibre breaks, or are connected to recording charts.
