Abstract
A mixture of solid iron sulphate heptahydrate FeSO4.7H2O (which contains residual moisture or which has been moistened, and which may be derived from the liquor used in the pickling of steel) and solid calcium oxide is turned over until the setting of the sulphate by the calcium. The calcium oxide may be in a pulverized form, in a stiochiometric excess, or in a 1 : 1 weight ratio with the sulphate. The atmosphere over the mixture may be evacuated during the turning over of the mixture, preferably after the evolution of steam. Oxygen may be passed over the mixture, or the mixture may be heated externally, and ferric oxide, Fe2O3, may be formed. The mixture of ferric oxide and calcium sulphate may be separated by wet magnetic separation.
