Abstract
1,000,931. Nuclear reactor fuel elements. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Nov. 7, 1961 [Nov. 9, 1960], No. 39774/61. Heading G6C. A nuclear reactor has a core of moderator material surrounded by a layer of reflector material, and is provided with fuel elements which include a can containing nuclear fuel and an absorber material adapted to absorb the gaseous fission products emanating from the irradiated nuclear fuel, said elements being positioned-in the reactor core so that the absorber material is located in or beyond the layer of reflector material. The walls of the can may be impermeable graphite or partly so, in that the part of the can adjacent the absorbent material arranged to be positioned beyond the reflector material may be of stainless steel. Figs. 1 and 2 show a fuel element A consisting of a graphite can 1 with a graphite end cap 8 sealed thereon. The fuel containers 2, only one of which is illustrated, are formed of permeable graphite and have a central cylindrical part 10 containing the nuclear fuel 3, and enlarged ends 11 which have parts cut away to form grooves as shown in Fig. 2. The enlarged end of the container positions it in the can 1. The absorbent material 4, e.g. carbon or porous graphite, is positioned as shown in the end part of can 1. Element A is placed in the coolant channel 13, extending through the moderator block 6 and the reflector material C. This channel has three longitudinal grooves 14 spaced as shown in Fig. 2, the element being positioned on the lands 15 between the grooves. The end part 12 containing the absorber 4 is positioned within the reflector material C at the inlet end of channel 13. Blocks 6 are formed with recessed faces 16 between corner portions 7, so that adjacent corners abut, whereas faces 16 are free to bow to absorb stresses due to expansion. Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) illustrate an embodiment in which the can has a stainless steel end cap containing the absorber material, and this end cap projects beyond the reflector material into an outer shield. If required, the can may be completely sheathed in stainless steel.
