Abstract

Soap and synthetic detergents are admixed with optical brightening agents comprising the salts of 4,41-bis[411-amino-611-di(b -hydroxyethyl) - amino - 111,311,511 - triazin - 211 - yl - amino]stilbene - 2,21 - disulphonic acid or 4,41 - bis[411 - methylamiino - 611 - di(b - hydroxy-ethyl - amino - 111,311,511 - triazin - 211 - yl - amino]stilbene - 2,21 - disulphonic acid with an alkylolamine of the formula NRR1R11 wherein R represents a C2-4 hydroxyalkyl group or a group AO(BO)nH, wherein A and B each represent a C2-4 alkylene radical and n is an integer of from 1 to 8, and R1 and R11 each represent a hydrogen atom, an alkyl or cycloalkyl group, or a group as defined for R.ALSO:The invention comprises salts of 4,41-bis-[411 - amino - 611 - di(b - hydroxyethyl) - amino-111, 311,511 - triazin - 211 - ylamino]stilbene -2,21 - disulphonic acid or 4,41 - bis[411 - methylamino - 611 - di(b - hydroxyethyl) - amino 111,311,511 - triazin - 211 - ylamino] stilbene - 2,21 -disulphonic acid with an alkylolamine of the formula NRR1R11 wherein R represents a C2- 4 hydroxyalkyl group or a group Ao(Bo)nH, wherein A and B each represent a C2- 4 alkylene radical and n is an integer of from 1 to 8, and R1 and R11 each represent a hydrogen atom, an alkyl or cycloalkyl group, or a group as defined for R. The above salts are used as optical brightening agents and are prepared by reacting the alkylolamine component with a suitable quantity of sulphonic acid component.ALSO:Cotton, paper pulp and paper (particularly photographic paper) are brightened by treatment is the presence or absence of soap or synthetic detergents with aqueous or glycol solutions of salts of 4, 41-bis[411-amino-611-di(b -hydroxyethyl) -amino-111, 311, 511-triazin-211-ylamino] stilbene-2, 21-disulphoric acid or 4, 41-bis[411-methylamino-611-di(b -hydroxyethyl) -amino-111, 311, 511-triazin-211-ylamino] stilbene-2, 21-disulphoric acid with an alkylolamine of the formula:- N RR1R11 wherein R represents a C2-4 hydroxyalkyl group or a group AO(Bo)n H, wherein A and B each represent a C2-4 alkylene radical and n is an integer of from 1 to 8, and R1 and R11 each represent a hydrogen p atom, an alkyl or cycloalkyl group, or a group as defined for R.
