Abstract
The invention comprises solid, anhydrous, polyamide - forming compositions comprising caprolactam and a catalyst and cocatalyst for anionic lactam polymerization. Such compositions may be prepared by (a) heating caprolactam with an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal or a basic derivative of such a metal in the absence of water and oxygen so that a lactam/lactam salt mixture is formed, (b) removing volatile material from this mixture, (c) adjusting its temperature to 70-100 DEG C., (d) dispersing a cocatalyst in it and (e) allowing it to cool and solidify. Basic metal derivatives specified include NaH, NaOH, NaOMe, and NaNH2. 0.01-10 mole per cent may be used and the catalyst may be formed at 69-200 DEG C. optionally under reduced pressure. Cocatalysts specified include poly-(Bisphenol A carbonate), the b -lactone of 2,2,4-trimethyl-3-hydroxypent-3-enoic acid, phenyl isocyanate, diphenylcarbamyl imidazole, sebacoyl dipyrazole, diphenyl carbonate and diphenyl isophthalate. 0.02-5 mole per cent may be used. The resultant composition may be simultaneously moulded and polymerized by heating at 150-190 DEG C. in an extruder or injection moulding machine. In examples, a dry nitrogen atmosphere was used.
