An induction motor drives through a speedresponsive coupling consisting of a housing C 1 containing granular or powdered material acting on a drag rotor C 2 , the housing being directly secured to the motor rotor B. Various arrangements involving more than one coupling or more than one motor are described. The motor may be of planar air-gap type (Fig. 4, not shown).
