Abstract

1,098,927. Sonic blind-aid. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 15, 1966 [April 29, 1965], No. 17983/65. Heading H4D. In a sonic blind-aid in which acoustic energy is radiated to a field of view and received after reflection from an object therein by a transmitter-receiver system incorporating two receiving transducers mounted on a head set the transmitting and receiving transducers are constructed and oriented such that the overall sensitivity of the system has a directivity pattern similar to that of the auditory system of the user to provide natural binaural location of the object. The invention is applicable to the blind aid system of Specification 978,741, and may involve the transmission of frequencymodulated ultrasonic signals which are heterodyned with the received signals (as described in that Specification) to provide audible beat signals which are fed to left- and right-hand earphones, or may involve the conversion of the echo-times of amplitude-modulated (e.g. pulse) transmission signals to range-dependent audible tones. Acoustic energy is transmitted with substantially uniform amplitude (represented by K in the polar diagram of Fig. 1) over an angular field of view H to J, and the principal axes E, F of the directivity lobes C, D are arranged to diverge from the centre of the field of view. In a first embodiment (Figs. 4 to 7), an elongated transmitting transducer (216) is mounted with the receiving transducers (217) on a spectacle frame, the ends of transducer (216) subtending an angle greater than that included by the normals to the receptive surfaces of transducers (217). In a second embodiment (Figs. 8 and 9) two elongated transmitting transducers (316) are mounted on a spectacle frame and their radii of curvature at their inner ends (316f) is arranged to be parallel to or inclined towards central axis (362) to compensate for the reduction in transmitted signal strength along axis (362) which would otherwise occur. The construction of the transmitting and the receiving transducers is described and is similar to that of the transducers of Specification 978,741.
