Abstract

Surfaces, e.g. of containers, are sterilized by contacting them with a gaseous plasma comprising an ionized body of gas for a short period so that no appreciable physical change of the surface occurs. Apparatus for carrying out the process comprises means for directing an inert gas towards the surface and electrical means for ionising and subsequently forming a plasma of the gas. In apparatus for sterilizing the interior of a container, the gas directing means is arranged to "sweep out" the space inside the container.
