Abstract
1,098,149. Electric igniters. UNITED AIRCRAFT OF CANADA Ltd. Nov. 29, 1966. No 53427/66. Heading F4F. A glow igniter to be mounted in a gas turbine engine combustion chamber wall 43 and supported by engine casing 32 comprises a hollow cylindrical metal housing 31 open at one end into the combustion chamber, the housing containing an electrical and thermal insulating core 33 and a spiral glow igniting element 42 which provides between itself and the core a cavity partially filled by a cross-shaped electrical and thermal insulating member 40, the element 42 being connected between an electrode 36 and the housing 31, and the housing wall forming the cavity being provided with apertures 44 through which air can circulate and carry off fuel vaporized by the element 42 for ignition in the combustion chamber. The outer end of spiral element 42 may be spaced 0À015 to 0À035 inch from housing 31.
