A screw-and-nut device comprises a screw 11 of uniformly twisted strip, and a nut formed of two or more part-cylindrical segments 18, 19 of low friction material such as P.T.F.E. urged together by springs 22 in circumferential grooves 30, the depths b, c of the slots 14 in the segments forming the screw-receiving passage being less than half the width a of the strip so that the opposed faces 20, 21 of the segments do not contact each other. The segments are housed in a sleeve 31 which is prevented from rotation relative to the segments by a radial pin 34. In a positioning device, the nut is connected to a part (15) to be moved by a strap (16) (Fig. 2, not shown) and the screw is rotated to cause axial movement of the nut.
