Abstract
2 - Hydroxymethyl - 5 - and - 6 - hydroxybicyclo-[2, 2,1]-heptene are made by reacting 2-hydroxymethylbicyclo-[2,2,1]-heptene-5 at 100 -180 DEG C. with excess C1- 4 aliphatic monocarboxylic acid in presence of a Lewis acid, and transesterifying the resulting diester with a monohydric aliphatic alcohol in presence of a basic catalyst. In a modification, the Lewis acid need not be used where the carboxylic acid is formic acid.
