Abstract

1,097,334. Universal joints. CAM GEARS Ltd. Aug. 24, 1964 [Sept. 10, 1963], No. 35642/63. Heading F2U. A universal joint, for use in a motor car &c. steering system, comprises a shaft hub F formed with a socket of square cross-section receiving the correspondingly square crosssectioned end of a shaft A, the side faces C of the shaft end having a convex shape to permit swivelling. Rubber &c. pads J are provided between the inner sides of the hub socket and steel &c. inserts K forming the rubbing surfaces. The end D of the shaft A is of frusto-spherical shape, and engages a hardened insert H at the bottom of the socket. A retaining flange L on the shaft hub F engages behind a ridge E round the end of the shaft, to prevent axial separation of the parts.
