Abstract
A silicon rubber is made by mixing: (A) a hydroxylated diorganopolysiloxane having a viscosity of at least 5000 cs. at 25 DEG C., and (B) from 20 to 50 parts (by weight) per 100 parts of (A) of a carbon black having an average particle size of less than 50 millimicrons and a structure index of from 120 to 200, and thereafter admixing therewith; (C) a silane of the formula RnSi(OR1)4- n or a partial hydrolysate thereof, wherein R is a monovalent hydrocarbon (h.c.) or halo-h.c. radical, R1 is a radical containing from 1 to 8 C atoms selected from h.c., halo-h.c. and omega-alkoxyalkyl radicals and n is 0 or 1, (C) being present in an amount of 2-10 parts per 100 parts of (A) and (D) a curing catalyst, and immediately thereafter allowing the mixture to cure. Catalysts (D) specified are dibutyltridi-acetate and -octoate, stannous and ferric octoates, cobalt naphthenate, tetra - butyl -, - octyl - and - isopropyltitanates, n - hexylamine, hexylaminehydrochloride, butylamine acetate and guanidine 2-ethylhexoate. Plasticizers, e.g. liquid siloxanes, thickening agents, e.g. hydrogenated castor oil or CaCO3, and other conventional additives, may also be added. Examples of the above compositions are given.
