1,097,378. Cover lifting apparatus. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Dec. 1, 1966 [Dec. 8, 1965], No. 53860/66. Heading B8H. An apparatus for lifting a manhole cover 46 with a central aperture 48 comprises a chassis 2 and a control lever 20 mounted on a pivot 18 and supporting, via a pivot 24 and a yoke 26, a vertical rod 28 to which a bar 32 is pivotally attached for rocking between a position in which it is parallel to the rod 28 for entry into the cover aperture 48 (as shown in Fig. 1), and a position perpendicular to the rod 28 (as shown in Fig. 3) in order to support the cover 46 during pivoting of the lever 20. As shown the chassis 2 is on wheels 12 and the cover 46 may be held in the raised position by a pin 51, a manipulator 44 being used to move the bar 32. A safety frame 50 sliding in guides 53 and locked by pins 52 may be extended to provide protection at the access to the opening when the cover 46 has been moved away.
